oh yeah, I was supposed to write about this

Many hours ago, or the entry before this one, I imported a picture because I wanted to say something about it.  I changed my mind, and decided to write about something, but I didn't.  I came back, and after writing a completely incoherent entry about xanga, I remembered what I was really supposed to write about.  Here we go:

Couple days ago, I had a chance to have lunch with Lillian.  She asked me a simple question, "do you like classical music?"

I shrugged, and said something of this nature, "not really."

"do you have any favorite composers?"

"well, I do like mozart, chopin, and listz..."

and we went on but the rest of the conversation is not important.  What is important is that I was compelled to say "not really," or "I don't have an opinion," to the question, "Do you like classical music."  Why?  because I'm ignorant.  How can you like or dislike something that you don't really know anything about?  At best, I can only sort of conclude to dislike like it because classical music has pretty much been omnipresent all my life, yet it did not interest me.

I mean, I do enjoy chopin quite a bit, but I can't say that I love classical music just because I love one composer.  It's like saying, "I love impressionism, I love Monet.  Other impressionists?  I don't know about them." Or something like, "I love Lakers.  The only player I know is Kobe though."

You cannot say you're a fan of the entire team when you only know of one player.  True, you can't possibly know everything about the team, like Gasol's social security number, but you should at least know the starting line up, most of the bench players, and the team's history before you can say you love a team.

Anyways, I was quite satisfied with the way I answered Lillian's question.  But all this makes me realize my ignorance.  Let's end with a quote from Oscar Wilde

"It is only an auctioneer who can equally and impartially admire all schools or Art."

oh, and do I look like a person that would enjoy classical music?  I get that a lot, but I don't have an opinion about it, though I usually prefer something more improvisational.  I mean, I do say I like jazz, but honestly, I like something slightly more structured than twenty minutes of improvisation.

  1. i always associate jazz with you and i think it might have to do with me knowing that you play the bass and having some sort of interest in jazz music.
i guess your answer could reveal ignorance but a lot of people respond to questions the same way you did. isn't it more like you've heard enough classical to know whether or not you would like to listen to more of it? i dunno...just trying to make sure you don't kill yourself for being ignorant haha.

  2. I sounded quite morbid huh? I noticed it while I was writing, but I was too lazy to fix it. But regardless of the tone, I think I was too analytical, kinda like someone I know, haha.
